07 Nov Engage sponsors inaugural Credit Unions of Wales Awards
Contis Group and its market leading Engage programme were delighted to be a main sponsor for the recent, and first ever, Credit Unions of Wales Awards.
The event took place at the Senedd (National Assembly for Wales) in Cardiff on 17 October which was also International Credit Union Day.
The Credit Unions of Wales is a Welsh Government-supported marketing collaboration between credit unions in Wales. There are 19 credit unions in Wales as a whole, of which Engage works with around 11. The credit union movement is growing in Wales: in 2000 there were 10,000 members of credit unions in Wales, this has now risen to 75,000.
The keynote speaker was Jane Hutt AM – Leader of the House in the Welsh Government – who explained that credit unions are high on their agenda. Actress Hi-De-Hi! star Ruth Madoc gave out the awards to winners including Kalamba Kazadi, a member of Cardiff & the Vale Credit Union, for his work starting an orphanage in the Democratic Republic of Congo with the help of a loan from the credit union and pupils of St Mary’s RC Primary School in Bridgend for running a credit union savings club in school.
Deborah Levy, Managing Director of Engage, said: “We are a proud supporter of the credit union movement in Wales and are excited to see it go from strength to strength. It was a pleasure for the Engage team to sponsor this first ever Credit Unions of Wales Awards, meet the award winners and hear their amazing stories first hand.”
